"Waterfall" never existed until Agilists needed a straw man. They often quote Royce's paper "Managing the Development Of Large Software Systems" as defining the waterfall method, but if you actually read the paper it emphasizes iteration and revision. It is in fact entirely consistent with an "agile" approach.
