The collective result is no magical uplifting of the collective by an invisible hand, but something more along the lines of the tragedy of the commons. Given some common resource, the use of which is unregulated by fees, individuals will tend to use that resource until it’s exhausted, rather than cooperate on self-imposed moral grounds, to ration and preserve it.
