There is a long history of using the third person plural as a non-gender-specific singular pronoun. As English doesn't formally have a common form of the third person singular pronoun (even though it has neutral, feminine, and masculine) it's a very sensible use. After all, English is a living language, if we all stuck to the rules we were brought up on we would still understand Bede without a translation.
