The first computer I owned had 1MB of RAM and a 20MB hard disk - I am excepting the one I built at university which had (I think) 4k RAM and no disk. I couldn't imagine filling that disk with the documents I was writing in PC-Write. Later, using EMACS the joke was that it stood for Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping. And so it goes...

Can't remember who said it first, but software gets slower faster than hardware gets faster.
