Royce's paper that is often cited as the origin of "waterfall" was actually nothing of the sort and is perfectly consistent with "Agile". He merely described a set of processes that should be followed to develop software. He made it perfectly clear that this was NOT intended to be linear overall, although t was often read as such. Indeed, the term waterfall didn't even come to prominence until the agilists needed a strawman to pit their approach against.
