I'm right-handed and use my mouse on the left of the keyboard. I was shown this by a colleague (also right-handed) many years ago. He pointed out that with a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad, placing the mouse to the right of the keyboard meant any physical notebook was quite a stretch away. It really doesn't take long to get used to using the mouse in the "wrong" hand.
