I rarely need to do any real precision work but I find my left hand is fine when I do. I think it helps stability, and hence control, to have a mouse mat with a wrist pad.

I've been doing this for over a decade so I don't remember how long it took, but I know it wasn't that long. Certainly not months and probably days rather than weeks.
