Florian Lefebvre suggested asking “what is the real problem?”, which is a bit more directed than simply asking “why?”. When I started working with requirements, my mentor expressed it as “what is the purpose?”. The use of “purpose” seems to really trigger something in people much more than “what is the problem?” or “why do you want to do that?”. It is now my main question.
