Bizarrely, this even works in Africa. My (black)wife and I (white) recently travelled to see her family in Africa. We had carefully packed six bottles of wine and a bottle of liqueur in our baggage. The bags were all X-Rayed at the airport after immigration. So the customs people could see what we were carrying. I was told later that we could officially only bring two bottles of wine each into the country. My sister-in-law told me that we got away with it because I am Muzungu (white). I don't know if that's true or if the customs people just couldn't be bothered, though the latter is unlikely.
