An ex-boss of mine never used to discount our day rates. He would make it clear what our standard day rate was, and if the client quibbled and we still wanted (or needed!) the work, he would offer some free days. This meant that the standard day rate was still the expectation for future work, whereas if he had discounted, that rate would be expected in future.
